Guest at The Ranch Workshop

Terrie Hayward and Ken Ramirez Present

Separation Anxiety – A Team Approach

May 12 - 13, 2023

Join Ken Ramirez and Terrie Hayward at The Ranch where they will delve into separation-anxiety-related behaviors and solutions. Terrie and Ken will team up to help you discover how working as a “team”—veterinarian, veterinary behaviorist, caregiver, doggy daycare provider—can lead to either relaxation or to resignation and/or anxiety. Our goal, of course, is a relaxed and comfortable dog.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Terrie and Ken will discuss what separation anxiety looks like and how it is defined. They will dive deep into the specific protocols that lead to calm behavior when an animal is alone. The workshop will use a hands-on approach; you will practice specific skills and role-play the components of separation anxiety resolution. You will also demonstrate and practice the same skills with the resident Ranch animals onsite.

You will:

Gain a clear understanding of splitting approximations during desensitization.

Learn how to use counter-conditioning effectively in real-world, separation-anxiety-related cases.

Learn how to change gears and adjust criteria based upon the learner’s observable body-language feedback.

Experience workingwith best-practice and science-based tools to reach animal-welfare goals.

Learn how to set up clients for success and have realistic discussions about timelines and success.

Gain an appreciation of how all of these techniques apply to other animals by working with The Ranch animals.

The workshop will be offered to 6 dog/handler teams and 30 participants without dogs. Everyone will have the opportunity to work with The Ranch animals to learn the protocols discussed in the workshop; everyone will be able to watch the dog/handler teams practice the skills and discuss the outcomes of those sessions.

Join us for a unique team-based approach to working with separation anxiety related issues.

Dog/Handler Team Requirements

Dog and Handler teams do not have to be experienced but should be familiar with the use of the clicker and reinforcement. Dogs should be comfortable in group settings around strangers and other dogs. They will need to be able to focus and work confidently for food in close quarters around other working teams.

Dogs should NOT have separation anxiety issues as the dogs in this workshop will need to be comfortable waiting patiently in their crate outside the classroom or in the car between working sessions.
